The family of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto has announced that their daughter, Mitchell Jelimo Kemboi, will be laid to rest this Friday at their family home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.

The late Mitchell Jelimo died on the evening of Friday, April 3, following a tragic road accident in the Taita Taveta region. The incident occurred when the family’s vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary trailer that lacked visible signage. The crash left several other family members, including Captain Ruto and his other children, with injuries requiring hospitalization.

In a statement, KPA management confirmed that Captain Ruto and his children are currently in stable condition and undergoing specialized medical care. “We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while traveling with his family,” the Authority noted. “Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited the KPA chief in the hospital over the weekend to assess his progress and offer condolences on behalf of the government. Following the visit, the Cabinet Secretary reassured the public that the Managing Director and his surviving children are out of danger.

“I condoled with Captain Ruto and wished him and other members of his family a quick recovery. The doctors assured me that the MD and his two children are out of danger and that they should be out of the hospital soon,” Murkomen stated. The CS also raised concerns regarding road safety, specifically pointing to the dangers posed by unmarked stationary trailers on major highways.

The Kenya Ports Authority has indicated that it is fully cooperating with the National Police Service and other transport regulatory bodies as they conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the fatal collision.

Captain William Ruto, a veteran of the maritime industry with over 30 years of service, was recently reappointed to lead the Authority for a second term. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating the operational challenges of the region’s largest port.

The burial ceremony on Friday is expected to be attended by high-ranking government officials, maritime industry stakeholders, and community leaders from across the country. The family has requested privacy as they finalize the funeral arrangements for their daughter.
