Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially assured the public of comprehensive security arrangements as the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise kicks off across Kenya today, March 30, 2026. Speaking during a church service at Kapyego in Elgeyo Marakwet County on Sunday, the CS confirmed that all administrative and security agencies have been mandated to provide “all necessary support” to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Securing the Vote and the “Niko Kadi” Surge
The deployment of security personnel is intended to address recent concerns raised by youth groups in Thika regarding long queues and potential disruptions. With the ECVR transitioning from constituency offices to the ward level today, the government expects a significant surge in turnout, driven by the viral “Niko Kadi” youth mobilization movement.
“We have directed our administrative and security agencies to work closely with the IEBC to guarantee a smooth and secure process,” Murkomen stated. The presence of security teams is also aimed at ensuring the safety of the 15 high-speed BVR kits being deployed per constituency and protecting IEBC officials during their 30-day “village-to-village” rollout.
Restoration of Peace in Kerio Valley
In a significant security update, CS Murkomen hailed the ongoing stabilization of the Kerio Valley region. He noted that the government’s appeal for the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms has seen a positive response from residents, which he described as a “key step” in eradicating the banditry that has historically plagued the area.
Restoring peace in these North Rift counties is seen as essential for the ECVR exercise, as it allows IEBC clerks to reach remote areas that were previously inaccessible due to insecurity.
A Call for Issue-Based Politics
Accompanied by Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich and Principal Secretaries Raymond Omollo and Festus K. Ng’eno, the CS urged political leaders to move away from ethnic-based mobilization. As the country prepares for the 2027 General Election, Murkomen emphasized that the focus should remain on issue-driven engagement rather than divisive rhetoric.
Context of the Launch
The ECVR launch coincides with several major national developments:
- Logistics: The IEBC has resolved the earlier kit shortages in regions like Thika, with 15 units now operational per ward to meet the 2.5 million new voter target.
- National Health & Environment: Principal Secretary Festus K. Ng’eno, who was present at the Kapyego service, recently participated in the launch of the National Health Security frameworks, highlighting the “Whole-of-Government” coordination currently being practiced across ministries.
- Weather Challenges: Security and administrative teams are also on alert to assist with registration logistics in areas affected by the ongoing nationwide flooding, particularly in the Nyanza and Rift Valley regions.
