Graduates from the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) have emerged as the primary beneficiaries of a new international recruitment drive, securing the lion’s share of healthcare placements in Germany. According to the latest data from the African Business Community (ABC), an international recruitment firm, KMTC graduates secured 84 positions in the current cycle, significantly outpacing other leading Kenyan universities.
The success marks KMTC’s first major foray into the German labour market, adding to its established footprint in the UK, USA, Australia, and Asia.

KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch revealed that the college is not slowing down, with an additional 159 graduates currently undergoing preparation for placement as soon as they meet the requisite linguistic and professional benchmarks.
The “German Opportunity”: Addressing a 20,000-Worker Gap
Germany is currently facing a critical workforce crisis in its healthcare sector, driven by an aging population where over 20% of citizens are aged 65 and above. This demographic shift has resulted in:
- Physiotherapist Shortage: A deficit of more than 20,000 qualified professionals nationwide.
- Rising Rehabilitation Needs: A growing burden of chronic conditions requiring long-term physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
- Economic Demand: A robust healthcare system with the financial capacity to recruit and integrate foreign specialists.
Support Framework for Graduates
To ensure a “smooth transition” for Kenyan medics, the partnership with ABC provides a comprehensive support package, including:
- German Language Training: Intensive courses to meet the B1/B2 proficiency levels required for professional practice.
- Credential Recognition: Assistance in navigating Germany’s rigorous professional licensing (Anerkennung) process.
- Logistical Placement: Direct job matching with German hospitals and rehabilitation centers.
Professional Impact
For many, the move is a career-defining milestone. Alex Omweri, a KMTC-trained physiotherapist now practicing in Germany, noted that the foundation provided by the college allowed him to adapt quickly to the high European standards. “I did not imagine my training would take me ‘majuu’ (abroad). Working here is expanding my skills and helping me grow personally,” he shared.
While physiotherapy is the current focus, ABC is expanding its scope to include nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and occupational therapists, signaling a long-term pipeline for Kenyan healthcare professionals to help stabilize the European healthcare workforce.
