A devastating road accident occurred on Saturday evening along the Nyeri–Nyahururu highway, claiming the lives of at least 15 people. The incident took place near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology when a lorry transporting logs reportedly veered off the road and rammed into a public service vehicle (PSV) belonging to the Nyekicha Sacco.
Details of the Collision
Police reports indicate that the heavily laden lorry lost control before colliding with the matatu, which was carrying passengers at the time. The impact resulted in immediate fatalities, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities in Nyeri County for emergency treatment.
National Leadership Mourns the Victims
President William Ruto expressed his “deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences” to the families affected by the tragedy. He confirmed that both the national and Nyeri county governments are coordinating to provide necessary support to the bereaved families and those currently hospitalized.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also issued a statement, emphasizing the need for stricter adherence to road safety protocols. “Drivers, observe safety precautions. Any time you are on the road, remember your own life, the lives of your passengers and those of other road users are in your hands,” the DP urged.
Calls for Regulatory Reform
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, while mourning the victims, directed a stern challenge to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Wetangula called for:
- Tightened Regulations: Stricter enforcement of road safety guidelines to prevent further loss of life.
- Vehicle Inspections: Rigorous scrutiny of the roadworthiness of heavy-duty vehicles and PSVs.
- Driver Professionalism: Assessing the training and conduct of commercial drivers to ensure public safety.
Regional Safety Context
The Nyeri–Nyahururu stretch is known for its winding terrain and heavy commercial traffic. This accident follows a period of heightened concern over road safety in Kenya, particularly as heavy rains—which have already caused flooding at the Ahero Bridge and claimed 103 lives nationwide—continue to reduce visibility and deteriorate road surfaces across the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley.
This tragedy also comes just as the parliamentary fraternity is mourning the loss of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, a veteran member of the Transport and Infrastructure Committee, who passed away early Sunday morning.
