The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a comprehensive national security strategy to ensure public safety during the 2026 Easter holidays. This heightened alert comes at a critical juncture as the festivities coincide with the closure of schools, the peak of the long rainy season, and the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise.

Multi-Sectoral Deployment

In a statement released Tuesday, March 31, the NPS confirmed the deployment of additional personnel and resources to high-traffic areas. The strategy aims to maintain law and order across several key sectors:

  • Transport Hubs: Increased patrols at bus termini, railway stations, and airports to manage the surge in holiday travel.
  • Public Spaces: Enhanced visibility at shopping malls, open-air markets, and popular recreational areas.
  • Religious Sites: Targeted security for churches and places of worship as millions gather for Holy Week and Palm Sunday commemorations.
  • Critical Infrastructure: Fortified protection for power plants, water treatment facilities, and communication hubs.

Intensified Road Safety Enforcement

Following the tragic Nyeri-Nyahururu highway accident that claimed 15 lives last Saturday, the NPS has placed a heavy emphasis on traffic law enforcement. Pedestrians, boda boda operators, and Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers are urged to exercise “the highest degree of caution.”

Key Safety Mandates for Motorists:

  • Strict Speed Limits: Rigorous monitoring of speed governors and manual checks.
  • Zero Tolerance for DUI: Increased sobriety checkpoints near major social hubs.
  • Weather Vigilance: Drivers are cautioned against the risks of reduced visibility and waterlogged roads caused by the ongoing deadly floods, which have already claimed 103 lives.
  • Protective Gear: Enforcement of helmet and reflective clothing requirements for all motorcyclists.

Strategic Coordination

The security beef-up follows recent high-level directives from Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and DP Kithure Kindiki, who both emphasized the need for “security and stability” during the 19th Ambassadors’ Conference. The NPS is working in close collaboration with administrative agencies to ensure that registration centers for the IEBC voter drive remain secure even as the public focuses on holiday celebrations.

Public Vigilance and Reporting

The NPS has reminded the public that security is a collective responsibility. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant in crowded spaces and report any suspicious activities or abandoned luggage to the nearest police station or via the national emergency hotlines.

“Recognizing that this period will be characterized by increased travel, social gatherings, and tourism… the National Police Service has put in place a comprehensive strategy to maintain law and order,” the statement concluded.
