Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki has called on the Mount Kenya region to remain steadfast in its support for President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid, framing the move as a strategic necessity for the region’s long-term political interests. Speaking during a consultative meeting with residents in Maara, Tharaka Nithi County, the Deputy President also directly addressed the political activity of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua.
Kindiki emphasized that the region’s path back to the presidency is best secured by ensuring President Ruto serves a full second term. He reminded the audience of his proximity to the top seat, noting that he is “a heartbeat away” from succeeding the President in 2032.
“The unity of this region is paramount,” Kindiki stated. “By backing President Ruto now, we guarantee a stable transition and a return to the top seat when the time comes. We must look at the broader picture and not be distracted by localized political noise.”
Addressing the ongoing political movements by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kindiki maintained a firm stance. While claiming to be “unbothered” by Gachagua’s presence and influence in the populous region, Kindiki vowed to thwart any attempts to undermine the government’s agenda. He suggested that despite his current focus on service delivery, he is prepared to “teach a political lesson” to those seeking to divide the region against the current administration.
The Deputy President’s visit to his home county also touched on local infrastructure, which has been a point of contention for residents. He announced that the government is set to resume the long-delayed construction of the Nithi Bridge, a notorious blackspot on the Meru-Nairobi highway. Kindiki attributed previous delays to funding shortages and complex logistical hurdles but assured the public that the project is now a priority under the 2026/2027 budget cycle.
The remarks come at a time of shifting alliances within the Mt. Kenya political landscape. Since his appointment following Gachagua’s impeachment in late 2024, Kindiki has been working to consolidate his base and position himself as the primary interlocutor between the region and the Executive.
Political analysts suggest that Kindiki’s direct engagement in Tharaka Nithi is part of a broader “charm offensive” to neutralize Gachagua’s grassroots support before the 2027 official campaign period begins. As the Deputy President continues his regional tours, the focus remains on whether he can successfully bridge the perceived divide within the Mountain and deliver a unified voting bloc for the Kenya Kwanza administration.
