The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has confirmed that its Managing Director, Captain William Ruto, is currently receiving medical treatment following a severe road accident on Friday evening. The crash, which occurred while the official was travelling with his family, resulted in the death of his daughter and left several other family members hospitalized.

In an official statement released by the Authority on Saturday, KPA expressed profound grief over the incident and confirmed the loss within the Managing Director’s family. The organization noted that the accident took place during a personal journey, though the specific location of the crash site was not immediately detailed in the preliminary brief.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while traveling with his family,” the KPA statement read. “Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief.”

The Authority provided an update on the health status of the surviving family members, stating that Captain Ruto and the rest of his family are currently in stable condition. They remain under close medical supervision as they undergo treatment for various injuries sustained during the impact.

KPA management expressed gratitude to the political leadership in the coastal and structural regions for their intervention during the emergency. Specifically, the organization thanked Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime for their swift assistance and coordination of support services immediately following the report of the crash.

The circumstances surrounding the cause of the accident remain under investigation. KPA officials stated they are fully cooperating with the National Police Service and relevant transport authorities to establish the facts of the Friday evening tragedy.

Captain William Ruto is a highly regarded veteran mariner with over thirty years of service at the Kenya Ports Authority. His leadership has been central to the modernization of the Port of Mombasa and the operationalization of the Port of Lamu. He was recently reappointed to a second term as Managing Director, a position that oversees the primary gateway for trade in East and Central Africa.

The news of the accident has prompted a wave of condolences from stakeholders within the maritime and logistics industry, as well as from government officials. KPA has requested privacy for the family during the mourning period as they finalize funeral arrangements for the deceased.

Further updates regarding the recovery of the Managing Director and the progress of the police investigation are expected to be shared by the Authority in the coming days.
