The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has obtained a warrant of arrest for John Poriot, an immigration officer stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), after he failed to appear for his plea-taking session at the Kahawa Law Courts on Thursday.

Allegations of Human Trafficking

Poriot faces serious charges under the Counter-Trafficking in Persons Act (2010). The prosecution alleges that on October 3, 2024, the officer conspired with others to facilitate the unlawful exit of two Kenyan citizens, Evans Kipyegon and Isaac Kipruto, from JKIA.

The court heard that the victims were allegedly deceived with false promises of lucrative employment in the Kingdom of Thailand, only to be trafficked for exploitation.

Additional Charges: Proceeds of Crime

Beyond the trafficking allegations, Poriot faces a second charge under the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act (2009).

  • Seized Assets: The officer was allegedly found in possession of KSh 11,087.
  • Legal Basis: Authorities suspect this cash to be the direct proceeds of his alleged criminal activities at the airport.

Judicial Action and Next Steps

Presiding Magistrate Gideon Kiage issued the arrest warrant immediately following the officer’s non-appearance. The court has scheduled the matter for mention on April 8, 2026, by which time the police are expected to have apprehended the suspect.

Context: Strengthening Border Integrity

This case comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of Kenya’s primary port of entry. During the recent 19th Ambassadors’ Conference in Nairobi, government leaders, including DP Kithure Kindiki, emphasized the need for “security and stability” and the protection of Kenyans abroad as a “core obligation.”

The arrest warrant sends a strong signal regarding the government’s “Whole-of-Government” approach to purging corruption within essential services, especially as the country navigates a complex regional security landscape marked by the ongoing voter registration drive and Easter holiday security reinforcements.
